    Description

RICK GRIFFIN rare 1975 Grateful Dead poster catalog Moscoso Mouse Kelly
Guaranteed original old (printed in 1975) California Graphic Exchange poster catalog #1. This company was set up by my dad Gordon McClelland to sell rock concert posters designed by Rick Griffin and other poster artists that were friends of Rick’s including Victor Moscoso, Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelly.  Gordon and Rick operated this company from the early 1970s and into the 1980s. In the last few years (early 1980s) Jose Kent took over and ran the company until it folded.
For sale here is the first CGE catalog printed to advertise some of what the company had for sale in 1975. This is a first printing of the catalog, a small number of which were saved in very nice condition by my dad. If you look at the image on the front page of the catalog you will see an ink drawing of the Puss and Boots cat from the cat food can label. Then next to it  the letter A and next to that a log. All these are below the big #1. This is a “rebus” for CATALOG #1.  A rebus is a combination of pictures and letters that communicate a phrase. The idea of creating these rebus symbols goes back to heraldry traditions from the Middle Ages.
Check out all the Grateful Dead posters by Griffin, Mouse and Kelly and the many Neon Rose posters by Moscoso. A number of these were purchased from Cal Litho of San Francisco when the printing company went under. The posters were all first printings, but the people who ordered them, never paid the printing bill, so the poster stocks sat in dead storage until 1972 when my dad Gordon bought them. Other posters were designed by Griffin and printed by my dad to sell to Griffin collectors or to advertise concert and other events that were happening at the time.
On the back page of the catalog the price list reads “All poster are each or if you buy all 19 posters the cost is . Would certainly have been a solid investment considering what many of these posters sell for today.  Anyway, as stated the condition of this catalog is super nice. The folded size is 11 x 8 1/2 inches and when unfolded the total paper size is 11 inches high x 25 ½ inches wide. Mat finish, card stock paper.
NOTE - PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE EMAILING QUESTIONS OR BUYING THIS ITEM:
    1)  In this Ebay store, I will be listing various paper items featuring the art of Rick Griffin. These items were collected by my dad, Gordon McClelland, who is an avid collector of historical paper items and fine art.  He has great respect for the art of Rick Griffin;  so he carefully stored these items, which means most are in mint or near mint condition.
    2)  That said, some items became brittle or age-toned over the years.  This was of course out of his control. Actually in most cases that was planned. Griffin often selected mat (non-glossy) paper, with a rough tooth. Usually this was very cheap paper that he said reminded him of the construction paper he drew on as a kid. The printers told him that the prints would deteriorate rapidly and get brown like old newspapers, but he thought that was cool and wanted them to look like that. Consequently, some items are brittle and have brown toning to the paper. Those items with the poor quality paper will be clearly noted.
    3)  In some cases, I will have multiples for sale and in other cases there are only a few or individual items available.
    4)  For many years, my dad worked directly with Griffin. A number of the items I am selling were published in the 1970's and early 1980's when he and Griffin together operated a poster and print company named the California Graphic Exchange. The company was located in Corona Del Mar and
Santa Ana and was set up primarily to sell prints, posters, and original art produced by Rick Griffin. They sold these items through mail order catalogs, at the San Diego and Berkley Comic Cons. Additionally, they sold through poster shops including Ben Friedman’s Postermat in San Francisco and The Print Mint in Berkeley.
    5)  Additional information will appear in the description section of each item for sale.
